Inline citations make it easier for you to see exactly where AI-generated content comes from. Instead of just seeing a list of sources at the end of a response, you can view citations right where the information appears in the text. This makes it simple to check facts, understand how your content was created, and build trust in your results.
Inline citations are available across all Responsive AI experiences:
Guided Projects
AI Draft
AI Assistant (in Projects and Content Library)
Ask (including Lookup and Smart Search)
Note:
Citations show up only in view mode of AI-generated responses; they don’t appear when you edit or export content. When you apply a response to a project question, the content is saved without citation markers for clean publishing.
Responsive AI denotes citations through small link icons that appear directly in the text, and a short excerpt from the original content. You can:
Hover over the citation marker to see snippets from the sources that contributed to that part of the text. The page number also appears in the citation snippet for PDF and Word documents in the Content Library
Note: For multiple citations, the answer text and Link icon are highlighted upon hover, making it easier to see the start and end point of the respective citation in the response.
Click the name of the source to navigate to the exact spot in the original document (deep linking), with the relevant text highlighted.
This deep linking feature works for documents stored in the Content Library and public external websites configured as sources.
If a document type (such as documents stored in Google Drive or SharePoint) doesn’t support deep linking, you're taken to the document’s opening page.
Review the excerpt from the original content. You can click the snippet to view the source in a new browser tab.
Review the source type. Source types include Q&A pairs and documents (including Word, PDF, Excel, and PowerPoint) from your Content Library, and external websites.
Navigate through multiple citation sources.
